KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Bulldog Baseball team got timely hitting and strong pitching to sweep Sunday's doubleheader and earn a series split over Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State. Truman won game one 4-3 and the nightcap 7-3.

Rian Markes tossed six solid innings and Peter Young closed the door for his fourth save of the year in the opener. Markes weaved around eight hits and struck out three while throwing only 68 pitches.

The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second after a one-out double by Cole Brooks. With two outs, Dean Marais flared a single over the shortstop's glove for the 1-0 lead. Derrek Clyde hit a sharp ball to third that got away from Jack Goodwin to score Marais but Todd Paperd ran into the final out as Evan Kayser flipped it back to Goodwin at third for the out.

Truman got the runs and then some right back. The Bulldogs first three hitters reached. Bryan Edell brought home the first run on a ground out then Goodwin delivered the two run single up the middle for the 3-2 lead.

Saginaw tied things in the fourth as the bottom of the order struck again with a pair of hits and got a sac fly by Paperd to make it 3-3.

Carter was hit by a pitch in Truman's fourth and Edell doubled to right center. Goodwin lifted a sac fly to right that stood up as the game winning RBI.

Markes gave way to Young in the seventh and after a one-out hit by pitch and stolen base, Young finished it off with a pair of fly outs.

Game two didn't start out well for Truman. Blake Bagenstos struggled with control as he issued four walks, a hit batsman and an error on a failed pickoff yet the Cardinals scored only two runs despite having the bases loaded in both the first and second innings.

After Christian Watson got out of the jam in relief in the top of the second with an inning-ending double play, Truman loaded the bases with no outs. Carter drove in the first run as he reached on a fielder's choice as the first baseman dove to his right and threw to second for the force out. Carter swiped second to move into scoring position. Edell hit a sac fly to left to score Josh Abegg to tie the game at two.

Goodwin hit a ball in the hole between first and second but as Goodwin reached first, the throw got away from the pitcher covering to allow Carter to score on the throwing error.

Three straight singles by Brendan Trimble, Charlie Kreh and Abegg, all with two outs made it 4-2 in the third.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh when with two outs a single and failed pickoff attempt led to an RBI single by Adam Fitzgibbon.

Matt Tometz was successful on the pickoff to end the eighth inning for Truman then the Bulldogs broke through for some insurance runs. A leadoff walk to Trimble and a bunt single by Kreh started things off. Two consecutive pitches in the dirt scored Trimble from third. Carter stroked a single to right to score Kreh and Abegg and Truman led by the eventual final 7-3.

Young pitched a scoreless ninth as he followed Bagenstos, Watson, Tanner Forck, Matt Wade and Tometz to the hill.

Kreh was 4-for-5 on the afternoon with two runs scored and Carter and Goodwin each drove in three runs from the bottom of the Truman batting order.

The Bulldogs will open Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday with a trip to William Jewell and the start of a four-game series with the Cardinals.
