[노스웨스트미주리주립대_한미교육원] Swink, Wilmes present at state math teachers conference

Brianna Wilmes, a senior from Liberty, Missouri, who is majoring in elementary education and mathematics education, and Brian Swink, instructor of mathematics and statistics, presented at the Missouri Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) annual conference Dec. 1-2 in Columbia, Missouri.

Swink and Wilmes presented “Deal Me In: Card Games that Grow Number Sense,” describing interactive card games to help students master essential skills such as counting, basic facts, place value, fractions and probability, and reinforce learning or remediate deficiencies for older students.

“Our goal was to provide engaging games as a structure for facilitating mathematical discourse,” Swink said. “Teachers were reminded that student interactions should focus on sharing strategies to grow number sense, not speed or winning.”

Additionally, Wilmes was a nominee for MCTM’s Outstanding Preservice Teacher Award.

Swink joined the Northwest faculty in 2015 and teaches courses related to fundamentals of mathematics and math methods. He has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in elementary mathematics, both from Northwest.
