Troy University Surveying and Geomatics Sciences program wins national recognition_Troy University[트로이대학교,미국대학장학금]
Troy University's Surveying and Geomatics Sciences program is one of 10 in the nation to be honored with the Surveying Education Award by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).
The award, which includes a $10,000 prize, recognizes programs that best reflect the organization's mission to advance licensure for engineers and surveyors in order to safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the public. The award jury considered criteria such as student outcomes, student involvement, outreach and recruitment.
The award will be used to fund scholarships and recruit new students to the program, according to Dr. Steve Ramroop, program director and associate professor.
"This award will be used for recruiting new students into our Surveying and Geomatics Sciences Program by offering five to 10 scholarships," Dr. Ramroop said. "We believe that this will be an incentive to new students entering into the program and will help in recruiting efforts."
The program, which began in 1998, is the only accredited program in the state of Alabama and one of the few in the Southeast, Dr. Ramroop said.cl
"Our program is an excellent choice to meet students' educational objectives," he said. "It is small enough to provide the personal attention students deserve in one-on-one advising and small class sizes, but big enough to provide the facilities and advanced technical equipment necessary to understand the fundamental concepts of their chosen profession. Our objective is to provide students with the knowledge, communications skills and ability to successfully pursue a career as a geomatics professional. The distinguished faculty is able to explain the latest theories in the field, while also having a basis in practical work experience to share with students."
Dr. Govind Menon, director of TROY's School of Science and Technology, said the national attention received by the program is the result of the hard work put in by the students and dedicated faculty.
"I am not at all surprised that our Surveying and Geomatics program has received this attention," Dr. Menon said. "I am very proud of our geomatics faculty and students for making this program a national success."
Diane Porter, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Geomatics, said the criteria considered in making the award are an important part of all programs within the College of Arts and Sciences.
"The NCEES Surveying Education Award signifies that our program at Troy University is one of the premier programs in the country, with only 10 selected in the inaugural year of the award," Porter said. "Two of the major criteria for the award, student outcomes and student involvement, are central to all the programs in the Department of Mathematics & Geomatics and the College of Arts and Sciences, and the award reflects the excellent work being done in these areas."
The NCEES is a nonprofit organization made up of engineering and surveying licensing boards from all U.S. states and territories and the District of Columbia. NCEES helps its member licensing boards carry out their duties to regulate the professions of engineering and surveying and develops best-practice models for state licensure laws and promotes uniformity among the states.
