Northwest Missouri State University’s Office of University Advancement has announced Sam Mason is joining its staff as a development officer.

Mason assumes a role previously held by Steve Sutton, who retired in December after more than a decade in Northwest’s alumni relations and advancement area.

“We are pleased to have Sam join our Advancement team,” Dr. Lonelle Rathje, the executive director of development and campaign coordinator for the Office of University Advancement, said. “Not only are we fortunate to have his expertise, but his passion for Northwest is evident. Sam will be an asset to Northwest as we collectively work toward addressing important funding initiatives for the University.”

Mason earned his bachelor’s degree in 1988 from Northwest in broadcasting with a business emphasis. He joins the University Advancement team with 27 years of customer service, team management and sales experience.

Since June 2013, he had served Northwest’s National Public Radio affiliate, KXCV-KRNW, as an underwriting sales executive, significantly raising underwriting and program sponsorships to record-setting levels.

In his new role, Mason is tasked with fundraising responsibilities including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors to support the University and the Northwest Foundation. He will serve as a development liaison to academic departments and personnel to nurture philanthropic support.

He is active in the Maryville community as a member of the Maryville Host Lions club and helped lead the reinvention of the Maryville Farmers Market last summer. His wife, Andrea, is a third and fourth grade instructor at Horace Mann Laboratory School on the Northwest campus. The couple has three daughters.

“I've enjoyed my role at KXCV as not just the underwriting sales executive but also as the liaison between the station and the community,” Mason said. “I’m looking forward to my new role as development officer for the Northwest Foundation so that I can help the organization grow and make Northwest a better place for the students and the Maryville community.”

The Northwest Foundation, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation, is responsible for receiving, investing, stewarding and disbursing private support on behalf of the donors of Northwest for the benefit of the University, its students, faculty, staff and alumni. The Northwest Foundation is governed by a 30-member volunteer board of directors and staffed by members of Northwest’s Office of University Advancement.
