Plymouth State University Announces 2017 Commencement Speakers: Former U.S. Attorney, Carmen Milagros Ortiz and NH Businessman, Dick Anagnost(플리머스주립대학교)Plymouth State University

A distinguished former U.S. Attorney and a successful real estate developer credited with the revitalization of downtown Manchester, NH, will address the Plymouth State University Class of 2017 at the institution’s 146th commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

Carmen Milagros Ortiz, the first Hispanic and the first female to serve as U.S. Attorney in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree, Doctor of Public Service. Dick Anagnost, a real estate developer and president of Anagnost Investments, Inc., will be recognized with the Granite State Award for his contributions to New Hampshire and its citizens.

“Both of our Commencement guests have achieved success by following their multi-disciplinary passions, in law and public service or real estate and economics, respectively,” said Donald Birx, president, Plymouth State University. “Carmen Ortiz and Dick Anagnost have faced challenges in their careers and overcame them through hard work and resiliency—a message they will share with our newest alumni as they begin their careers or graduate studies.”

As the chief federal law enforcement officer of Massachusetts, Carmen M. Ortiz prosecuted white-collar crime in the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Economic Crimes Unit for 12 years before President Obama nominated her for U.S. Attorney and the United States Senate voted unanimously to confirm her in November 2009.  During her tenure, Ortiz helped send corrupt state lawmakers to prison and increased prosecutions of white-collar crime. She also implemented the District’s first civil rights initiative to reinvigorate enforcement efforts of federal civil rights laws.

With more than 35 years of experience in real estate and land development in New Hampshire and internationally, Dick Anagnost is credited with the revitalization of downtown Manchester and with improving the quality of life for the city’s residents by creating hundreds of jobs, building safe and affordable housing, and converting an abandoned meat-packing plant into an award-winning health care facility, Elliot at River’s Edge. He was also key to bringing a much-needed supermarket to the downtown area by transforming a vacant manufacturing building into a Market Basket.

Anagnost has received numerous awards and accolades from organizations throughout New Hampshire and New England and dedicates time to serving in state-appointed positions as well as on charitable boards as part of his personal mission.

Plymouth State University’s 2017 commencement ceremony will be held at the George E. Davis ’63 Track in the Active Living, Learning and Wellness (ALLWell) North facility. More than 5,500 attendees are expected, including more than 1,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree recipients.
